Handicare 2000 Curved Stairlift Fault Codes

The Handicare 2000 is a curved stairlift with a diagnostic display on the front of the unit.

One thing to know first: codes 3, 4, 5 and 6 have different meanings depending on whether your rail is on the left or right side of the staircase. Both are listed under each code below.

No display — Power off or batteries flat Check the main switch is on. If nothing happens, give us a call.

– (dash) — Charging, or joystick issue If the lift is on the contacts and charging, this is normal. If it's not charging, give us a call.

0 — General safety line The key switch may be off, the emergency stop pressed, or the seat isn't fully in the drive position. Check all three — key switch to ON, emergency stop not pressed, seat fully facing forward. If still showing, give us a call.

1 — Needs charging Drive the lift to the charging contacts and leave it to charge.

2 — Off charge Return the lift to the charging contacts.

3 — Track limit activated If your rail is on the left, the lift won't travel up. If your rail is on the right, it won't travel down. Drive the lift away from the end of the rail. If the code stays, give us a call.

4 — Safety edge activated If your rail is on the left, the lift won't travel up. If your rail is on the right, it won't travel down. Check for obstructions around the footrest. If clear and the code stays, give us a call.

5 — Track limit activated If your rail is on the left, the lift won't travel down. If your rail is on the right, it won't travel up. Drive the lift away from the end of the rail. If the code stays, give us a call.

6 — Safety edge activated If your rail is on the left, the lift won't travel down. If your rail is on the right, it won't travel up. Check for obstructions around the footrest. If clear and the code stays, give us a call.

7 — Low battery voltage Drive to the charging contacts. If the code keeps coming back after charging, give us a call — the batteries may need replacing.

8 — Travelling up Normal — no action needed.

9 — Travelling down Normal — no action needed.

A — Hinge open Make sure the hinge is fully closed. If it's already closed and the code stays, give us a call.

b — Toggle active at power up Give us a call.

C — Remote control mismatch Give us a call — the remote may need re-pairing.

d, E or H — Relay fault Give us a call.

F — Brake fault Give us a call.

G — Brake not connected Give us a call.

J — Hinge interlock fault Give us a call.

L — Current limit exceeded Give us a call.

n — Half speed If the batteries are low this can cause half speed — drive to the charging contacts. If they're charged and the code stays, give us a call.

o — Board memory fault Give us a call.

r — Power supply fault during charging Give us a call.

U — Power supply fault Give us a call.

y — Main board fault Give us a call.

.ll. — Overcurrent Give us a call.

Handicare 4000 Fault Codes

The Handicare 4000 is Handicare's newer curved stairlift, available with Simplicity, Style and Smart seat options. The codes are similar to the 2000 but with a few differences — and codes 3, 4, 5 and 6 work the opposite way round for left and right hand rails compared to the 2000.

No display — Lift switched off, batteries flat, or blown fuse Check the main switch is on. If the display is still off, give us a call.

– (dash) — Charging but lift won't drive Make sure both armrests are fully lowered and the seatbelt is closed.

0 — General safety line Check the emergency stop is not pressed, the key switch is ON, and the seat is fully swivelled forward. If still showing, give us a call.

1 — Batteries very low Drive to the charging contacts and leave to charge.

2 — Not charging Check the charger is plugged in. If it is and the code stays, give us a call.

3 — Track limit activated If your rail is on the right, the lift won't travel down. If your rail is on the left, it won't travel up. Drive the lift away from the end of the rail. If the code stays, give us a call.

4 — Safety edge activated If your rail is on the right, the lift won't travel down. If your rail is on the left, it won't travel up. Check for obstructions around the footrest. If clear and the code stays, give us a call.

5 — Track limit activated If your rail is on the right, the lift won't travel up. If your rail is on the left, it won't travel down. Drive the lift away from the end of the rail. If the code stays, give us a call.

6 — Safety edge activated If your rail is on the right, the lift won't travel up. If your rail is on the left, it won't travel down. Check for obstructions around the footrest. If clear and the code stays, give us a call.

7 — Batteries critically low Drive to the charging contacts if you can. If the lift won't move, give us a call.

8 — Travelling up Normal — no action needed.

9 — Travelling down Normal — no action needed.

n — Half speed On an internal bend this is normal. On a straight section of rail, give us a call.

d, E or H — Relay fault Give us a call.

F — Brake fault Give us a call.

g — Brake not connected Note: this can look like the number 9 on the display — check carefully. Give us a call.

.11. — Overcurrent Give us a call.

L — Current overload Check for anything obstructing the full length of the track. If it's clear and the code stays, give us a call.

r — Power supply fault Give us a call.

U — Power supply fault Give us a call.

o or h — PCB fault Give us a call.

b — Toggle active at power up Switch the lift off, wait 10 seconds, and switch it back on. If the code stays, give us a call.

C — Remote controls lost pairing Give us a call and we'll sort it out for you.

J — Hinge fault Give us a call.

Before You Call — Quick Checks

These resolve a lot of faults before an engineer is needed:

  • Is the key switch turned to ON?

  • Is the emergency stop button released?

  • Is the seat fully swivelled forward to the drive position?

  • Are both armrests fully lowered?

  • Is the charger plugged in with the socket switched on?

  • Have you tried a reset? Turn the main switch off for 10 seconds, then back on.

If none of these clear the fault, give us a call on 0208 936 3060 and we'll get an engineer out to you.
